Why Coaching in Acting Matters (And Why I Built ShowCoach™)
)
Early on in my acting journey, I learned a hard truth: talent might get you in the room, but it's not enough to get you the job.
About a year ago, I moved to New York City from West Palm Beach, Florida to pursue my dream of writing and acting on some of the most revered theatres and stages in the world. I didn’t have representation, a manager, or contacts. I didn’t have union membership or any relevant credits to this market. So, I did the only thing I knew how to do: I started auditioning for every project I could find, every single day. The culmination of that effort was 120 auditions in 120 days, for which I created a presentation and talk I gave at Actors Pro Expo 2025 on the virtual stage.
How did my 120 auditions go, you might wonder? I bombed plenty of them. I forgot lines. I played the wrong chords. I stapled my resume upside down. But I also landed some stellar readings, a double-digit number of callbacks, and a handful of roles. I grew and I learned fast. I started to see patterns. I figured out what worked, what didn’t, and—most importantly—what I didn’t even know I didn’t know.
That’s where coaching comes in, and why I’m such a huge proponent of making coaching for self-tapes and auditions accessible to every actor at any stage of your journey.
Here’s what I learned.
Coaching Is a Mirror
The value of coaching isn’t just in hearing what you did well or poorly. It’s about having someone hold up a mirror to the blind spots you can’t see on your own. A great coach can shine a light on your habits, your choices, and your patterns—whether it’s tension in your jaw or the lack of stakes in your delivery, bad lighting or distracting backgrounds or just a slight adjustment to your acting choices that makes your audition unforgettable. These are things that might take years to correct without help. Coaching accelerates that timeline.
We Don’t Rise to the Occasion—We Fall to Our Level of Training
Actors often think we’ll magically "rise to the occasion" in the audition room. But the truth is, we fall to the level of our preparation. Coaching gives your preparation a purpose. It’s not just about running the lines—it's about finding truth, risk, and clarity in your choices. It’s about making sure you’re not walking into the room with the same tape 100 other actors sent in. And that’s where the Critiques feature on ShowCoach™ makes a huge difference. By posting your self-tape work to ShowCoach’s Community Feed, you will attract structured, constructive feedback in the form of Critiques from coaches and other students who might see something in your tape that you don’t that can significantly help you improve your read, your performance, and your self-tape audition.
Practice Is the Work
Let me be blunt: your job is to audition. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to work.
That mindset shift changed everything for me. It’s why I started ShowCoach™. I wanted a space where actors could train like athletes—daily, intentionally, and with feedback that actually moves the needle. I couldn’t believe it didn’t already exist: an app where you could post a self-tape, get peer or professional critique, and keep leveling up in between jobs.
I couldn’t find anything like that out there on the internet. So, I built it. The result is the Craft Training Journey module of ShowCoach™ – an intelligent automated script generator that perfectly matches your style, approach, and goals in a step-by-step training tool. Generate a script with specific intentions like a monologue, or a scene, in any style, at any length, and record that audition.
When you upload it back to ShowCoach™, the app will recognize your work, offer Critiques, and move you through levels that make the scripts more complex and rigorous as you progress. Craft Training Journey allows you to work every single day, and it’s only $9.99/month. Where else can you find that kind of coaching at such a price?

You Don’t Need to Be Perfect. You Need to Be Practicing.
Coaching isn’t about perfection—it’s about process. And every great actor you admire? They still get coached. Still rehearse. Still get help shaping their moments. Why shouldn’t you?
