Why Supporting Artist Work Is a Smart Move for Actors
Discover why supporting artist work is a smart career move for UK actors - from real on-set experience to paid work and industry connections.
If you're building an acting career, you already know that one of the best ways to grow is to keep working. And one of the most practical – and underrated – ways to do that is supporting artist work.
Many actors overlook background work. But spend time on a major UK production as a supporting artist and you'll quickly see why others make it a regular part of their career – not as a fallback, but as a genuine advantage.
Here's why.
1. You get paid to be on set
If you're an actor between principal roles, supporting artist work can be a great way to make some extra money while staying within the industry. Day rates vary depending on the production and what's required of you. Speaking roles or roles which require a performative action pay more, as do roles that call for certain skills like swimming, driving or dancing.
2. You learn things you can't learn anywhere else
Regé-Jean Page – whose role as the Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton made him a global star – got his first on-set experience as a supporting artist in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In fact, he told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that he’d recommend it to every actor, stating:
"The best thing about background acting – particularly on big movies like that... is essentially no one pays attention to you in the background, so you get to be the best actor spy. I was just watching how these directors work with these actors."
3. You build real screen confidence
There's a difference between performing in a rehearsal room and performing on camera, on a live set, surrounded by a professional crew. Supporting artist work puts you in that environment regularly – and the comfort you build in front of a camera is something you carry into every audition and every role that follows.
4. You stay active between roles
Often acting jobs are like buses – you feel like you’re waiting ages and then two come along at once! Supporting artist work keeps you in performance mode between gigs, so when your next principal role comes around, you haven't missed a beat.
5. Your skills have real value
Productions actively look for supporting artists with specific abilities, so acting training can really work in your favour here. Physical awareness, the ability to take direction, emotional control: these are things a trained actor brings to background work that others simply don't have. If you also have skills like stage combat, dance, a musical instrument or a second language, you may be even more desirable to casting agents looking to fill specific background roles.
6. You could get spotted
Being professional, prepared and easy to work with gets noticed. Background work puts you in front of the ADs, directors and casting directors working across the UK's biggest productions, and it's not unheard of for actors to be upgraded from supporting artist to a featured or speaking role because someone on set saw something in them. You never know who's watching!
7. You get access to productions you couldn't otherwise reach
Supporting artist work is a legitimate route onto the sets of major film and TV productions shooting in the UK. Being a part of these epic productions – even in the background – is an experience worth having.
8. It fits around everything else
Auditions, classes, other acting gigs – supporting artist work is flexible. You choose which bookings to accept and which to turn down. There are no long-term contracts or fixed schedules. It works around your career rather than competing with it.
9. No two days are the same
Different productions, different characters, different locations, different people. If you've spent weeks in a rehearsal room working the same material, the variety of life as a supporting artist is genuinely refreshing.
