Could Voiceover Be the Missing Piece of Your Acting Career?

Have you ever wondered whether your acting skills could open doors beyond the stage or screen?

What if there was a part of the entertainment industry where you could work with global brands, perform in video games, bring animated characters to life, narrate bestselling audiobooks, and often work from your own home studio?

For many actors, voiceover is exactly that opportunity.

Yet despite being one of the fastest-growing areas of the entertainment industry, voiceover remains something of a mystery to many performers. I've lost count of the number of actors who've told me, "I'd love to do voiceover, but I have no idea where to start."

The truth is, most of the skills needed to succeed in voiceover are skills you may already be developing as an actor.

And that's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about helping actors discover this wonderful industry.

I feel incredibly grateful for the career I've had in voiceover.

For more than 25 years, I've had the privilege of working with clients including Disney, Starbucks, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Persil, BMW, video games, documentaries, animations and many more. Along the way, I've experienced plenty of successes, but also my fair share of struggles, setbacks, disappointments, and lessons learned.

Like most careers in the creative industries, my journey certainly hasn't been a straight line.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about helping actors and voice actors navigate their own voiceover journeys. I know how exciting this industry can be, but I also know how overwhelming it can feel when you're trying to figure out where to start or what your next step should be.

One of the greatest joys of my career today is helping people follow their dreams, build confidence in their abilities, and discover opportunities that allow them to do more of what they love. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing someone realise that a career they once thought was out of reach might actually be possible.

When I first started out as an actor, I had no idea that voiceover would become such a huge part of my career.

Like many actors, I thought voiceover was something that happened somewhere behind the scenes, a mysterious world reserved for people with "great voices" or celebrity status. What I eventually discovered was that voiceover isn't about having a special voice at all. It's about acting.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of working as a voice actor, producer, casting director, coach, and demo director, and I've watched thousands of actors discover opportunities they never knew existed through voiceover. Some have gone on to work in commercials, animation, video games, audiobooks, corporate narration, and dubbing. Others have simply found another creative outlet and income stream that complements their on-camera or stage work.

In 2026, more actors than ever are exploring voiceover and for good reason.

The Acting Industry Has Changed

The reality is that today's actors are building careers differently than previous generations.

Many successful performers don't rely on a single type of work. Instead, they create a portfolio career that includes stage, screen, commercials, teaching, content creation, motion capture, performance capture, and voiceover.

Voiceover has become an increasingly attractive option because it allows actors to use the skills they already have in new and exciting ways.

It's flexible. It's creative. It's global. And thanks to home studio technology, opportunities are more accessible than ever before.

Why Actors Often Make Great Voice Actors

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:

"I don't know if I have the right voice."

The truth is, clients aren't looking for a perfect voice.

They're looking for believable performances.

They're looking for someone who can connect with an audience, understand a script, communicate emotion, and tell a story.

Sound familiar?

Those are acting skills.

In fact, some of the strongest voiceover performances come from actors who stop worrying about how they sound and focus instead on who they're talking to and why.

If you've trained as an actor, you already have a huge head start.

The Variety May Surprise You

When people think of voiceover, they often picture cartoons or movie trailers.

The reality is far broader.

Voice actors work across:

  • Commercials

  • Animation

  • Video games

  • Audiobooks

  • Corporate narration

  • E-learning

  • Dubbing

  • Museum guides

  • Telephone systems

  • Podcasts

  • Promotional content

  • And much more

There are countless opportunities for actors to find areas that suit both their skills and interests.

Some performers thrive in character work. Others prefer corporate narration or commercials. Some discover a passion for audiobooks they never knew they had.

Voiceover isn't one career path, it's many.

Let's Bust a Few Common Myths

"I Hate The Sound Of My Voice"

Most people do.

You're used to hearing your voice from inside your head, not through speakers. It's completely normal.

The good news? Your opinion of your voice is rarely the thing holding you back.

"I Need A Unique Voice"

Not necessarily.

In recent years, the industry has moved increasingly towards authenticity.

Clients often want voices that sound real, relatable, and human.

"Voiceover Is Easier Than Acting"

Definitely not.

Voiceover is acting.

The only difference is that your audience can't see you.

"AI Means There's No Future In Voiceover"

This is one of the biggest concerns actors bring to me.

Yes, technology is changing the industry.

But audiences still connect with authentic human performances. The ability to interpret, empathise, make creative choices, and bring truth to a script remains uniquely human.

The actors who continue developing their skills, understanding the industry, and adapting to change will continue to find opportunities.

How Do You Know If Voiceover Is Right For You?

You don't need to have all the answers before you begin.

But here are a few signs voiceover could be worth exploring:

  • You enjoy storytelling.

  • You love bringing scripts to life.

  • You're curious about different areas of the industry.

  • You want another creative outlet alongside your acting work.

  • You're willing to learn new skills.

  • You're interested in building a sustainable, long-term career.

Most importantly, you're open to discovering possibilities you may not have considered before.

The Biggest Mistake I See Actors Make

Ironically, it's often trying to move too quickly.

Many actors hear about voiceover, get excited, and immediately start thinking about recording a demo.

But a demo is not where your voiceover journey begins.

A demo should showcase your skills, understanding of the industry, and readiness to compete professionally.

That's why training, research, and understanding where you fit in the market are so important first.

A great demo can open doors.

A premature demo can close them.

Your Voiceover Journey Doesn't Have To Start Today, But It Could Start Here

The wonderful thing about voiceover is that you don't need permission to explore it.

You don't need a perfect voice.

You don't need years of experience.

You simply need curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a desire to grow as a performer.

Whether voiceover becomes a small part of your acting career or a major focus, it offers opportunities to expand your skills, reach new audiences, and discover new ways to tell stories.

And that, ultimately, is what most of us became actors to do in the first place.

If you're curious about whether voiceover could be right for you, I'd love to help.

My workshop, A Complete Guide to Getting Started in Voiceover, is designed specifically for actors who want an honest, practical understanding of how the industry works and what steps to take next.
