Philip Martin

Director

BAFTA and Emmy Award winning director Philip Martin was born in Beirut and lives in London.

He worked as a script reader and music journalist before embarking as a documentary filmmaker - directing many acclaimed films on subjects as varied as the origins of the universe, the evolution of human behaviour, forensic science and theme park technology.

A landmark documentary series for the BBC on cosmology with Professor Stephen Hawking led to Philip’s first drama, the award-winning HAWKING starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Philip has won an Emmy Award for directing Helen Mirren’s last PRIME SUSPECT, a BAFTA for piloting the international hit series WALLANDER with Kenneth Branagh and another BAFTA for directing the multi BAFTA and Emmy Award winning political drama MO with Julie Walters.

Other notable projects include Working Title’s production of Sebastian Faulks’ WWI epic BIRDSONG with Eddie Redmayne, the crowd-sourced documentary feature JAPAN IN A DAY for Scott Free films and the acclaimed historical drama CATHERINE THE GREAT with Helen Mirren, shot on location in St Petersburg.

He was a founding member of the creative ensemble who launched NETFLIX’s record-breaking phenomenon THE CROWN, directing seven episodes across the opening two seasons of Peter Morgan’s celebrated drama and acting as executive producer on the series.

Philip has since directed and executive produced Amazon’s NIGHT SKY with Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons - and most recently the “electrifying” and “irresistible” Netflix number one film SCOOP with Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper and Rufus Sewell.
